Chris Holman - Statement
Paintings such as these represent a world in which colour shape and pattern are the forces through which a connection to the landscape is made and which then refer to or become an equivalent for the original.
In this way, it is the memory and atmosphere of a place that guides the picture; a memory which degrades over time, leaving only the main features of a setting. So the transience of the natural world is sought and through a landscape of shadows at dusk, or in the cool morning light; we might hear birds, feel the sun on our backs or sense the wind rustling the leaves on a tree.
